Inspired by hostile architecture encountered in daily life, this work explores the ambiguous relationship between protection and restriction. I became drawn to the defensive forms of urban structures and their unexpected resemblance to the security window grilles commonly found in Taipei. Reflecting on Taipei and Amsterdam, I observe and process how architecture can simultaneously protect, obstruct, and regulate the body through form and context.
Thought Fragments:
“Memory resides in the torso, in the palms, in the toes, in the gums and roots of the teeth, in every single strand of hair. Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body — through countless lifetimes and kalpas, scents, temperatures, pain and itch, sounds, sweetness and bitterness — all memories still exist, passing through the cycles of life and death with the flesh. And yet, do these memories truly still exist?” — Chiang Hsun
All these memories are passed down from our ancestors, different from the memories our brains carry. If the emotion of being touched and sometimes having unconscious reactions are the results of communication between the brain and our organs or body parts, then dreams could be the byproduct of these two types of memories encountering and entangling. It’s a very visual, vivid, and realistic experience — and yet, not. What would they talk about while I’m asleep?
